Scleral Buckle
Scleral buckle surgery is a surgical procedure used to repair a retinal detachment, a condition where the retina (light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) separates from the underlying tissue.
During scleral buckle surgery
- A thin, semi-circular band (buckle) made of silicone is placed around the eye.
- The buckle is positioned over the tear or detachment.
- Freezing is used to seal the tear.
Recovery:
- Most patients can go home the same day as surgery.
- Vision may improve gradually over several weeks or months.
- The buckle is usually permanent.
