Scleral Buckle

Scleral buckle surgery is a surgical procedure used to repair a retinal detachment, a condition where the retina (light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) separates from the underlying tissue.

During scleral buckle surgery

  • A thin, semi-circular band (buckle) made of silicone is placed around the eye.
  • The buckle is positioned over the tear or detachment.
  • Freezing is used to seal the tear.

Recovery:

  • Most patients can go home the same day as surgery.
  • Vision may improve gradually over several weeks or months.
  • The buckle is usually permanent.
